Jim Atkinson, a graduate of Washington Twp. HS, received a B. A. in Music Education from Glassboro State College (Rowan University) and a M. M. degree in Music Performance – Percussion from Ithaca College. He retired after teaching instrumental music for 26 wonderful years – 24 in the awesome West Deptford school system. He also taught percussion as an Adjunct Professor at Rowan University.
As a conductor, he has directed the Rowan Percussion Ensemble, the GCCC Orchestra and Choir, West Deptford HS musicals, South Jersey Junior High Concert Band and various marching percussion sections. He has performed with many ensembles including the Corning, Elmira, Haddonfield, Bridgeton and New Jersey Symphonies. He has also played numerous musicals in the NJ & NY area.
Jim has served in the Creative Arts ministry at Gloucester County Community Church for over 32 years. He has played drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, sax and percussion as a member of the worship team. He directs the lighting ministry, as well as the drama ministry. He has written, or been a part of, numerous productions and sketches with duties also including writing songs and underscoring, assisting in set designs, etc… as a part of the amazing and talented GCCC Creative Arts team.
He is an avid composer and arranger, having studied with Edwin Avril and Karel Husa, with over 25 copyrighted songs. As a member of the praise & worship band, Cornerstone, he collaborated in writing and arranging songs, as well as performing on keys and sax. His heart has always been to compose and play music to glorify God and edify the church.
Recently, the Lord chose to use difficult circumstances to direct Jim to Celebrate Recovery – an international 12-step, Christ-centered ministry. After attending and serving on the worship team, he was asked to step up and serve as the Ministry Leader. For the past 5 years, the ministry has grown in attendance and vision using the amazing Leadership Team that God has raised up. Armed with a new slogan, logo and extended outreach to the community, Celebrate Recovery continues to expand looking to begin teen and pastor/spouse recovery ministries soon. He presently serves as GCCC’s Advertising Director and Changed By The Word Production Assistant.
He resides in Pitman with his amazingly awesome wife, Wendi and three amazing children James, Robert and Ashlyn. His interests include anything trains, anything chocolate and vacations to Maine & Disney.
